Stevie Nicks had been asking Tom Petty for a song. When Tom Petty finally delivered, Stevie Nicks gave the gift back.
The reason was simple: Stevie Nicks could see how much the song meant to Tom Petty.
That decision became a small but revealing chapter in a musical friendship. One song stayed on a Heartbreakers album with Stevie Nicks singing alongside Tom Petty. Another helped introduce Stevie Nicks as a solo artist.
A request that finally worked
By the time Stevie Nicks was preparing the solo debut Bella Donna, Stevie Nicks was already famous through Fleetwood Mac. But Stevie Nicks also loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and wanted some of that band’s sound in a new setting.
Producer Jimmy Iovine provided a connection between the two recording worlds. Stevie Nicks also took the request directly to Tom Petty.
In an interview preserved in Cameron Crowe’s documentary Heartbreak Beach Party, Tom Petty recalled Stevie Nicks asking several times for a song. During dinner one night, Stevie Nicks pressed the request again.
Tom Petty agreed. By the following afternoon, Tom Petty had written the song.
The song that became difficult to give away
The result was “Insider.”
Anyone expecting an easygoing favor between famous friends would find something much heavier in the recording. “Insider” carries the strain of damaged trust and promises that have become difficult to live with. Tom Petty’s delivery sounds worn and exposed, while Stevie Nicks adds a harmony that deepens the uneasiness.
As the collaboration developed, Tom Petty realized how strongly attached Tom Petty had become to the song.
Accounts of the exchange describe the moment from slightly different angles. In one recollection, Tom Petty admitted wanting to keep the song. In the interview included in Heartbreak Beach Party, Tom Petty remembered Stevie Nicks recognizing that attachment and offering to let Tom Petty keep it, with another song to follow.
The outcome was the same. Stevie Nicks understood, and “Insider” remained with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Stevie Nicks’s voice remained, too. Released on Hard Promises in 1981, the recording allowed listeners to hear the musical partnership that had grown out of the original request.
Another song opened another door
The search for a song for Stevie Nicks continued. The next choice was “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” written by Tom Petty and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell.
Mike Campbell supplied the music, and Tom Petty supplied the lyrics. The Heartbreakers had already recorded the track with Tom Petty singing. Jimmy Iovine recognized the possibilities of bringing Stevie Nicks into the recording.
“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” became the lead single from Bella Donna in 1981. The record brought Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty together in a vocal exchange that became a familiar part of rock radio.
For listeners discovering Stevie Nicks outside Fleetwood Mac, the partnership offered a memorable introduction.
The understanding preserved on the record
The success of that later duet gives the earlier exchange an especially satisfying ending. Stevie Nicks received a song for Bella Donna, and Tom Petty kept a composition that had become deeply important to Tom Petty.
“Insider” preserves another part of the story: two distinctive voices meeting inside a song that began as a favor.
Stevie Nicks had wanted Tom Petty to write something worth singing. When that happened, Stevie Nicks also understood why the songwriter found it so hard to let go.
