On September 28, 2023, Toby Keith walked onto the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville and sang a song that was never meant to be about him. He had written it five years earlier for Clint Eastwood, a man who was nearly 88 and still making movies. That night, Toby Keith was 62, noticeably thinner and quietly fighting stomach cancer. In the audience, his wife Tricia kept wiping tears from her face.
The song was “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” It became the last song Toby Keith ever performed at an awards show. And it all started with one simple question on a golf course.
A Question Between Two Old Friends on the Golf Course
Toby Keith and Clint Eastwood knew each other through golf. Toby Keith was a regular at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where Clint Eastwood served as chairman, and the two had become friends. In late May 2018, Clint Eastwood invited Toby Keith to be his partner at The Clint, a charity tournament held at Eastwood’s own Tehama Golf Club in Carmel, California.
During the round, Clint Eastwood mentioned that his 88th birthday was coming up. Toby Keith asked what he planned to do. Clint Eastwood answered that he was about to start shooting a movie. That film was The Mule, the story of an aging veteran who ends up hauling drugs for a cartel.
Toby Keith, amazed that a man that age was still directing and acting, asked him what kept him going. Clint Eastwood later recalled his answer:
“I get up every morning, and I don’t let the old man in.”
Toby Keith reacted right away. According to Golf Digest, he told Clint Eastwood he was writing that line down on the spot. In Eastwood’s memory, Toby Keith said it would make a great title for a song.
A Song Written Without a Script
Toby Keith wrote “Don’t Let the Old Man In” by himself, with no other co-writers. He had never seen the script for The Mule. All he had was what Clint Eastwood had told him about the movie and that one sentence about refusing to grow old.
He recorded a stripped-down demo, just his weathered voice and very little else, and sent it to Clint Eastwood. That raw sound was exactly what Eastwood wanted. The song was featured in The Mule when the film opened in December 2018.
On country radio, however, it barely made a ripple. In 2018 the song peaked at No. 41 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. Toby Keith later put it on his 2019 collection, Greatest Hits: The Show Dog Years, and for a few years it stayed a quiet deep cut that only his most loyal fans really knew.
The Night at the Grand Ole Opry House
By 2023, the song meant something very different. In June 2022, Toby Keith had told fans he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021 and had gone through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. He stepped away from touring for about 18 months.
The inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards marked his return to television. Fellow Oklahoman Blake Shelton presented him with the Country Icon Award. Toby Keith joked that nobody ever expected to see him in skinny jeans, then thanked his family, his team and, most of all, the fans who had let him keep doing what he loved.
Then he sang “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” He later told NBC why he picked that song out of three decades of hits:
“Because I’ve been going through my cancer fight for the last couple of years and it’s really inspiring for a lot of people.”
Cameras caught Tricia in the audience, wiping away tears as her husband sang the lines he had once written for someone else.
Five Years Late, the Song Found Its Audience
The response was immediate. The song and its video jumped to No. 1 on the iTunes country charts. Within weeks, “Don’t Let the Old Man In” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart for the first time and climbed into the top three of the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart.
Toby Keith told fans the song was special to him and that they had made it clear it was special to them too. BMLG Records partnered with him to send it to country radio on October 30, 2023, five years after its release. It became the most added song at country radio that week.
Five Months Later
Toby Keith passed away on the night of February 5, 2024, about five months after that performance. His family said he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, and that he had fought with grace and courage. He was 62.
In the days that followed, “Don’t Let the Old Man In” returned to No. 1 on the Country Digital Song Sales chart. For the week after his death, Toby Keith held every spot in that chart’s top 10, a first in the chart’s history.
The song started as an old movie star’s answer to a simple question. Toby Keith turned it into a promise to keep getting up every morning. When you hear it now, do you think of Clint Eastwood, or do you think of Toby Keith on that stage in Nashville?
