Freddie Mercury has no grave. There is no headstone for fans to visit, no plaque, no public resting place. More than three decades after his death, only one person in the world knows where the Queen frontman’s ashes were laid to rest. Her name is Mary Austin, and she has never told anyone. Not his parents, not his sister, not even her own family.
The Woman He Called His Wife
Freddie Mercury met Mary Austin around 1970, when he was 24 and she was 19. They fell in love quickly, and a few years later he proposed. The engagement ended after Freddie told her about his sexuality, but their bond never did. Mary stayed in his life for the next two decades as his closest friend, his confidante and eventually his personal assistant.
In a 1985 interview, Freddie explained just how much she meant to him:
“All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible.”
He went on to call her his common-law wife, and said she was the only friend he had.
A Request No One Else Heard
Freddie Mercury kept his illness private for years. Mary was one of the few people who knew, and she was there with him during his final days at Garden Lodge, his home in Kensington, West London. On November 23, 1991, Freddie publicly confirmed that he had AIDS. He died the next day, November 24, at the age of 45.
Before he died, Freddie made a very specific request. He did not want a grave. He wanted Mary to take his ashes and put them to rest somewhere private, and he wanted the location kept secret forever. Mary later told the Daily Mail why:
“He didn’t want anyone trying to dig him up as has happened with some famous people.”
He wanted the place to stay a secret, she said, and it would.
Two Years in His Bedroom
After Freddie was cremated, Mary took his ashes. For two years she kept the urn at Garden Lodge, in his bedroom, the house he had left to her in his will.
When the time finally came, Mary made sure no one would know where she was going. She asked a driver, a man who had also driven Freddie, to take her to the spot. She never told him why. She did not tell the staff at Garden Lodge either. She did not even tell her own parents. Whatever happened that day, it happened between Mary and Freddie alone.
Even His Family Doesn’t Know
Over the years, rumors have placed Freddie’s ashes everywhere from the shores of Lake Geneva, where he had a home, to Zanzibar, where he was born. None of them has ever been confirmed.
Freddie’s own family asked Mary to tell them. She refused, and she has said that it was painful. In an interview with The Guardian, she admitted that if she were in their place, she would have felt upset and hurt not to know. But she said she had no choice. As she put it, keeping the secret was “the job he asked me to do.”
She told them again and again that she was sorry, and that she could not tell them.
A Promise Kept
Mary Austin has spent most of her life away from the spotlight. She lived for more than 30 years at Garden Lodge, the house where Freddie died. In September 2026, now in her mid-seventies, she published a book drawn from his private notebooks and handwritten lyrics, sharing more memories of Freddie than ever before. But on the question fans ask most, she has stayed silent.
In a book collecting his own words, Freddie Mercury once said he would love Mary until he drew his last breath. She, in turn, has kept his final wish for more than three decades.
Do you think Mary Austin should keep Freddie’s secret forever?
