In the spring of 1990, Elton John was one of the most famous musicians on earth. In the first week of April that year, he was in Indianapolis, inside Riley Hospital for Children, sitting with a family from small-town Indiana as their 18-year-old son was dying.

The young man was Ryan White. By the time the week was over, Elton John had done far more than visit. Ryan’s mother, Jeanne White-Ginder, later said that from looking at caskets to choosing a church, Elton handled it all. She also said there was nothing the family needed at the hospital that he did not try to take care of.

A Boy His Town Did Not Want

Ryan White was born in Kokomo, Indiana, in 1971 with severe hemophilia. He depended on blood-clotting treatments to live a normal life. In December 1984, at 13, he was diagnosed with AIDS after contracting HIV from a contaminated blood product. Doctors gave him six months to live.

He lived more than five years. But when he tried to return to school, many parents and faculty fought to keep him out, even though doctors said he posed no risk to other students. After years of threats and legal battles, the family moved to Cicero, Indiana, in 1987. Elton John had already become a friend, and he helped the family with the down payment on their new home.

The Last Week at Riley Hospital

On March 29, 1990, Ryan entered Riley Hospital with a respiratory infection. Elton John arrived on April 2 and stayed. He later said he spent that final week in Indianapolis alongside Jeanne and Ryan’s sister, Andrea.

The hospital was flooded with calls from well-wishers. When Michael Jackson, another close friend of the family, asked whether a telephone could be put in Ryan’s room so he could talk to him, it was Elton who arranged the phone line by Ryan’s bed. During those same days, Senator Ted Kennedy called Jeanne to ask whether a new federal AIDS bill could carry Ryan’s name.

Jeanne has described one moment she never forgot. Elton was crying, and he looked at her and said that with all the money in that room, they could not bring this boy back.

On April 7, the night before Ryan died, Elton made a surprise appearance at the Farm Aid benefit concert in Indianapolis. The next morning, Palm Sunday, April 8, 1990, Ryan White died at 7:11 a.m. Elton John was at his side.

Caskets, a Church and a Choir

In the days after, Elton helped Jeanne with the hardest decisions a mother can face. He went with her to look at caskets and helped choose the church. He also worked with the choir from Ryan’s school, Hamilton Heights High School, preparing the students to sing with him at the service.

April 11, 1990

More than 1,500 people filled Second Presbyterian Church on Meridian Street in Indianapolis for the funeral. It was standing room only, and the service was carried live on national television.

First Lady Barbara Bush was there, and so was Michael Jackson. The pallbearers included Elton John, talk-show host Phil Donahue, football star Howie Long, Ryan’s uncle and two of his school friends.

Elton led the congregation in singing “The Lord Is My Shepherd.” Then he sat at the piano and sang “Skyline Pigeon,” a song he had written in 1969, two years before Ryan was born. That same day, former President Ronald Reagan published a tribute to Ryan in The Washington Post.

What Ryan Left Behind

Four months after Ryan died, Congress passed the Ryan White CARE Act, which grew into the largest federally funded program for people living with HIV and AIDS.

For Elton John, the change was personal. He had been battling a cocaine and alcohol addiction for years. On July 29, 1990, he checked himself into Parkside Lutheran Hospital in Chicago. He has said that Ryan’s funeral, and seeing what Ryan went through, was the catalyst. Speaking at Harvard in 2017, he put it simply:

“I wanted to help them, but they ended up helping me much more.”

In 1992, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation. In July 2026, he marked 36 years of sobriety. Twenty years after Ryan died, he wrote his friend a public letter, telling him he had been by his side when he died at Riley Hospital and that Ryan had been with him every day since.

Do you remember Ryan White’s story, or where you were when you heard the news in April 1990?
